Spring 2014
Help give students in your community a ‘smart start’
It’s time for the Young Agents Council SmartStart4Kids back-to-school drive! Since the school-supply initiative started six years ago, Young Agents Council members have collected more than one hundred thousand dollars in supplies for deserving children throughout the state. For 2014, we’ve upped the ante with a goal of collecting thirty-five thousand dollars in school supplies.

Here’s how it works: Throughout the month of July and the first two weeks of August, FAIA member agencies and company partners in YAC zones stock up on school supplies—anything from backpacks to binders—and deliver them to the nearest drop off location. Items are assigned point values, and the zone and agency with the most points earn extra cash to donate to their zone’s recipient organization. All recipient organizations are non-profit groups that serve low-income families, single-parent homes, homeless shelters, and foster children.

Go online to find the points value and tracking list, plus a list of zone coordinators, drop-off locations, and recipient organizations. The contest is open to all FAIA member agencies, but only those with YAC members can win. Not a YAC member yet? Join now! Scholarships are available for first-time young agents.

Meet new YAC Vice Chair Brandon Butler
Brandon, a vice president with Butler, Buckley & Deets, Inc., in Miami, is the 2014-2015 vice chair of the Young Agents Council.

    Q. What attracted you to this business?
    A. My father, Raymond Butler. I’ve always looked up to him and wanted to carry on our family business.

    Q. If you weren’t an insurance agent, what would be?
    A. I am obsessed with football so either something along the lines of coaching or a being sports agent.

    Q. What would people be surprised to know about you?
    A. I was a professional motocross racer for 8 years.

    Q. What is your guilty pleasure?
    A. Brownies for sure. I can’t turn down brownies.

    Q. What is the No. 1 thing on your bucket list?
    A. I am very fortunate to have been able to live a very adventurous lifestyle, but one thing I would love to do before I go is to dive with a great white shark.

    Q. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the insurance business?
    A. Go back to school! (Just kidding.) I would tell them that this is an amazing industry and profession to get into. It is not as easy as most people think. You don’t become a successful agent or broker overnight. It takes dedication, determination, and, most importantly, patience. However, the upsides are endless!

    Q. What is the best professional advice you’ve ever received?
    A. One thing that my grandfather passed on to my father, who has now passed on to me, “pigs get fat but hogs get slaughtered.” That’s just a little reminder to never get too greedy.

    Q. What are you reading?
    A. “The Secret Race” by Tyler Hamilton and Daniel Coyle. It is pretty amazing.

    Q. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
    A. I would like to see myself helping Butler, Buckley & Deets grow! I would like to see myself as a successful business owner, agent, and, most importantly, a father.

FAIA’s Young Agents Council is a longtime supporter of the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit organization that awards scholarships to children or spouses of wounded or fallen service members. As of January 2013, FOH has awarded more than 3,800 scholarships—awards made possible through partnership with groups such as the Young Agents Council. Over the course of five years, YAC has contributed about seventy thousand dollars to Folds of Honor through funds raised during the annual golf tournament and additional donations from FAIA members.
