FEMA Procedures
**NOTE** - No deductibles are automatically paid. FEMA does not duplicate payments from anyone.
Procedures to receive assistance from FEMA are as follows:
1) Register with FEMA
2) From the registration FEMA determines if the consumer has the ability to repay a loan or not.
a) "Ability to repay" means consumer may receive an SBA loan
b) "Not able to repay" means consumer may receive a FEMA grant (as a last resort). Maximum amount allowable is
up to $5100 for repairs.
In either case (SBA Loan or FEMA Grant) Insurance comes first.
Summary of FEMA Assistance:
If the $5100 FEMA assistance loan will not put the consumer safely, securely and sanitarily in a home FEMA will issue them a temporary rental check. If they have additional living expense (ALE) it would have to be exhausted first. If there is no temporary housing available in the area, (i.e. everything is destroyed) as a final and very last resort FEMA might be able to bring in a mobile home.
If proceeds for insurance for real property loss are less than the maximum amounts of assistance that FEMA can give then (and only then) the consumer may be eligible for uncompensated deductibles.
