Responses have been totaled and categorized in the following areas:

Overall Ranking: Responses for every category and subcategory were totaled and averaged (excluding only companies with less than six overall responses) yielding a ranking between 1 and 29 (see Exhibit 1).

Overall Averages Each Category: The top five companies and their averages are listed for general categories without regard to subcategories, i.e. overall company management approach, which includes the subcategories of flexibility, friendliness and ability to communicate (see Exhibit 2).

Top Five Each Subcategory: The top five companies and their averages are displayed in each sub-category, i.e. competitiveness in personal lines, compared to direct writers (see Exhibits 3 through 9).

Summary Data Record: Titled FAIA’s 2003 Company Survey Results, this display contains all information for all 29 companies, including number of responses, averages for every subcategory and overall averages. This year we showed each company's ranking and average, if applicable, from both previous reports. Companies are listed here in alphabetical order.

NOTEWORTHY ACHIEVEMENTS

Several companies performed particularly well and deserve special mention here. First, Auto Owners jumped from fifth best in Florida in 2001 to number one in the eyes of independent agents in 2003. Auto Owners, Cincinnati, Amerisure, Old Dominion, and a carrier not included in previous years, North Pointe, are the top five companies in Florida according to independent agents, overall. Worthy of honorable mention is Mercury, which came in sixth place overall.

This year two carriers received perfect scores from every agent who chose to rate them:

Cincinnati: received perfect scores in three categories—Fairness in Claims Handling, Homeowners Competitiveness compared to other agency companies, and most important, Agency Loyalty.

North Pointe: received perfect scores for Service in both New and Renewal Personal Lines Business.

Other noteworthy scores include the following:

Old Dominion: for being in the top five in the categories of Management Approach, Compensation, Underwriting Attitude, and Agency Contract.

Tower Hill: for ranking second in Homeowners Competitiveness when compared to other agency carriers or when compared to direct writers.

Amerisure: for Best Overall Company Management Approach.

Progressive: for being in the top five in every Service category except one, including; New and Renewal Personal Lines and Commercial Lines, Quotes, Endorsements, Claims and Accounting.

Cincinnati: for receiving the highest score in all but two of the six Compensation categories and State Auto for being in the top five in all but two of the six.

Finally, when looking at the three areas of Agency Contract, Agency Loyalty and Agency Compensation, one company consistently dominates the landscape, Cincinnati. Other carriers seemingly not far behind are Auto Owners, Old Dominion, Mercury, Amerisure, and State Auto.
