Certified Insurance Counselors

The Certified Insurance Counselors (CIC) Program has been the insurance industry's premier, proven source for practical, real-world education since 1969. Earning the Designation

You must successfully complete five CIC courses and pass five exams within five calendar years. To earn the designation, participants must score 70% or better on the two-hour, essay style exam.

Scholarships are available for participants who are employed full-time in the insurance or risk management industry. It is recommended that the applicant has a minimum of two years industry experience. The scholarship only provides the registration fee – no additional expenses. Scholarships applications should be submitted by June 1st and December 1st and will be awarded by the end of that month.The scholarship must be used within 12 months of receiving the award.

CIC Institutes: Choose 5 of 7

  1. Agency Management: Learn the foundation of agency planning and analysis, financial performance and management, managing all aspects of personnel, and ways of developing an efficient organization designed for growth and profitability.
  2. Commercial Casualty: Get current and practical policy knowledge; learn how to apply the limits of liability and be able to recommend appropriate endorsements.
  3. Commercial Multiline: Drill down into emerging topics—such as cyber and crime—that are critical to today’s marketplace from both property and casualty perspectives.
  4. Commercial Property: Learn to use innovative ways to maximize coverages for commercial accounts with up-to-the-minute forms and the latest trends.
  5. Insurance Company Operations: Understand your role and interrelated functions within the company and how advanced executive strategies and improved business functions affect success.
  6. Life & Health: Gain an understanding of the basic characteristics, provisions, and riders found in most life, health, and retirement contracts, and target these financial products to the specific personal and business needs of your clients.
  7. Personal Lines: Develop a strong personal lines book of business and growing commission income with this comprehensive course.

Each institute is 16 hours of instruction, followed by an online exam the following Monday - Thursday. Examinations are optional unless you wish to earn the CIC designation.

Register for CIC classes by following the class link. If you are not already in the FAIA database, you must first request a login before you can register. After you complete the request, an email will be gerenated for you to create a password so you may register. If you need help with registration, contact Christy Stacey.


2024 Outstanding CSR of the Year Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2024 National Outstanding CSR of the Year Award. This award, sponsored by The National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research, is the Alliance’s highest honor for insurance customer representatives. Anyone can nominate, whether it’s a supervisor or co-workers. You can even nominate yourself!

Anyone whose primary duties revolve around insurance customers service, regardless of their affliciation or professional designation, is eligible to enter. Eligible candidates must:

  • Be insurance customer service representives, account managers, or have primary responsibility for customer service duties.
  • Submit a completed entry form that includes references, and education/contribution/achievement information.
  • Submit letters of recommendation from business/professional references. 
  • Write a 500 to 1,000 word essay on the following topic: 
"In today's volatile economy, both property and auto markets are in turmoil, with soaring rates and inflation impacting insurance agencies and their customers. CSRs face unexpected challenges from global events, economic shifts, and emerging risks. Explore how resilience and adaptability are crucial for CSRs to navigate these challenges, maintain customer satisfaction, and share real-life examples of success in meeting evolving customer needs amidst adversity. In your essay, discuss how the dual pressures of economic instability and customer expectations shape the role of CSRs, and discuss the innovative approaches and best practices employed to mitigate challenges and foster enduring customer relationships."

Applications are due by May 1, 2024. Nominees will first compete on a state level. State winners will automatically be entered into the national competition. The rewards for each stage of the competition are as follows:
